Rough day. Spent all day in bed. Trouble breathing. Cough treated with codeine. Worsening. Breathing didn't get better through the day. Going to spend the night in hospital to try and get some relief. Haven't eaten. Had a liter of fluid this morning. Lots of visitors today .. Joel K, Cathy W, Joseph and Kineret Z, Pat H, Joseph and Jennifer R, Kevin D and Mark M. Skyped with Sam and Kate in London and then with Rebecca, Cameron and Declan in Kansas City. Spoke with Ben also. Talked with mum on the phone.
Two mets quite painful. One in the right hip and the other in the right lower chest.
This represents a significant decline from yesterday.
Haven't coughed up any more blood.
Just waiting for hospital transport. Hopefully will feel better soon.
Dear Geoff
ReplyDeleteI was extremely distressed to learn this news. I do hope and pray that you receive great comfort and relief.
It has brought back memories of those days in the early 1970's when we discussed the relative merits of respiratory medicine over gastroenterology. I have a vague memory of Kero (Alan Kerr-Grant) wanting you to join him.
I am so glad you chose Respiratory Medicine. You have made atremendous contgribution and all the awards are most appropriate.
I am heavily involved in the ALF being on several ALF committees.
In spite of not having all much contact with you in recent times I have been proud to follow you career.
Kind regards

ReplyDeleteDear Geoff and Chris,
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear this news but not surprised to read of your courage, humour and equanimity in facing these awful events. I think that you have always been an inspiration to others, no less now than in the past.
You have left a legacy which will be remembered both here in Australia as in the USA. The Australian Lung Foundation, which you founded, is flourishing and your encouragement to others in interventional bronchology will always be remembered.
More especially do I remember and cherish the warmth of your welcome to me when I arrived in Australia and your continuing support and friendship. The memory of your wonderful dry sense of humour brings a smile to my lips, even now.
With warm regards,
Martin Phillips
Dear Geoff
ReplyDeleteI was very sad to hear the news about your declining health. I hope your medical team can at least keep you comfortable. I want to thank you for all your past support and advice and for the trust you placed in me when you asked me to represent the Australian Lung Foundation in Tasmania, after I returned there in 1990. It was a pleasure to work with you and I am pleased to still be supporting the ALF. You have been an inspiration to me and to many of our respiratory colleagues. Your pioneering work in CT bronchoscopy in the USA was amazing. The accolades you have received are well deserved. Thank you. Sincere wishes to you and to Chris. Regards. Jim Markos, Tasmania, Australia.

Dear Geoff
ReplyDeleteJust learned about your blog from Kim. Been thinking about you a lot. I hope that your medical group can ease your pain and get you back to a hearty appetite and quality time to enjoy all of your family and close friends. I have greatly valued our many scientific discussions over the last few years and will greatly miss your counsel. In reading this blog from the beginning I am impressed, but not surprised, with the heartfelt comments of your numerous friends and family and with your courage and equanimity and class in facing this disease. If I can help in any way, be it in overcoming gravity or needing some different food (I make a mean berry cream pie and creme brulee) please email me or give me a call at 331-6212. My very best wishes and regards,
Lou
